India vs West Indies, 2nd Test: Jaiswal’s 173 and Sudharsan’s 87 Power India to 318/2 on Day 1

Delhi Test, Day 1: India 318/2

So, India's in a pretty good spot against the West Indies after Day 1 of the Delhi Test, sitting at 318 for 2. The pitch at the Feroz Shah Kotla wasn't exactly a bowler's dream – kind of slow and low, making it tricky to get the ball to do much. But Yashasvi Jaiswal, that kid just can't stop scoring runs. He ended the day not out on a fantastic 173. And B Sai Sudharsan played a solid innings too, knocking out 87 runs. Together, they really put India in a commanding seat.

Jaiswal's innings was his seventh Test century, which is awesome. You could really see the batting depth we have. The West Indian bowlers tried hard, but they just couldn't seem for the most part to make enough trouble when the ball was in play.

A Day of Solid Play

India's captain, Shubman Gill, won the toss. It was his first win in seven attempts!, and chose to bat. The West Indies bowlers started off quite well, to be fair. They didn't give away many runs in the first 12 overs, and they were really accurate. They didn't bowl a single extra the whole of the Day. Which you don't see often.

But because they could not get any wickets, it was a problem. After the ball stopped moving, India's batters started scoring. They added 126 runs without losing a wicket in the second session. This made it very difficult for the West indies.

Jaiswal: The Run Machine

Jaiswal's innings let us what we can expect from him. At first, he was carefully. Then, when the bowlers made errors, he was aggressive. Even when they bowled good balls, he was calm.

At one stage, he scored a lot of his runs from bad balls:
 Six fours from half-volleys
 Four fours from short balls
One four from a slightly fuller length
He was happy to defend the good balls. He was Patient and had good shot selection.

Form that Breaks Records

  • Jaiswal's seventh Test century means he now shares the record for the most centuries by an opener before some one turned 24.
  •  Only Sachin Tendulkar has scored more hundreds for India before that age.
  •  Interestingly, he has scored 150+ in five of these seven centuries.

Sudharsan's Chance:

  • Sudharsan got to play at No. 3, and he took the chance. He scored 87 from 165 balls. After KL Rahul got out, the 23-year-old showed good technique.
  • Sudharsan and Jaiswal put on 197 runs together. His only two times of concern were against Warrican. First, he was dropped on 58, and then he got out by a ball that spun a lot.
  • Even though he didn't get a century, Sudharsan's innings was a positive thing.

Dinesh Karthik's Thoughts: A Lesson in Concentration

  • Dinesh Karthik, said Sudharsan could have done better.
  • Too ordinary from Sai Sudharsan. He should have been more back or shot with more punch. The runs are there, said Dinesh Karthik.
  • Karthik was right to be concerned. Sudharsan missed a century.

West Indies Needs Good bowling

  • The West Indies were accurate, but they did not threatening. They had accurate bowling in the morning, but after, the ball did not move.
  • Jomel Warrican, the left-arm spinner was the only one to be a damage. But, India's batters were very good.
  • Captain Gill's End to the Day
  • Shubman Gill finished the day on 20. He was very patient and calm.

🏏 Day 1 In Simple Terms

When Runs Wickets Important Points
Morning 94/1 1 Rahul gets out early; Jaiswal settles in
Afternoon 126/0 0 Jaiswal & Sudharsan dominate with solid partnership
Evening 98/1 1 Sudharsan falls short of 100; Gill and Jaiswal steady the innings

📊 At the end of Day 1: India 318/2 (Jaiswal 173*, Sudharsan 87, Gill 20*)

🎯 West Indies Bowling: Warrican 1/83, Joseph 0/64, Seales 0/49

What is Next

  • For the West Indies, the challenge will be to summon sustained intensity and exploit any signs of fatigue in India’s lineup.
