World-Class Sports City Coming Up in Amaravati: Andhra Pradesh’s Big Leap in Sports Development

The Andhra Pradesh government has unveiled an ambitious plan to establish a world-class Sports City in Amaravati, marking a major step towards transforming the state into a national hub for sports and athletic excellence. Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha recently announced that Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu’s administration is committed to creating international-standard sports infrastructure that will place Amaravati on the global sporting map.

According to the minister, the proposed Sports City will not just feature stadiums but a complete ecosystem for athletes - from training and education to competitions and sports tourism. The project aligns with the Andhra Pradesh Sports Policy 2024–2029, which emphasizes building an inclusive sports culture and nurturing world-class talent from the grassroots level.

The government aims to develop Amaravati as the “Sports Capital of India,” equipped with state-of-the-art facilities such as:

•  Multi-disciplinary stadiums for cricket, football, and athletics
•  High-performance training centers with advanced technology
•  Indoor arenas for badminton, boxing, table tennis, and basketball
•  Aquatic complexes, sports medicine centers, and athlete hostels
•  An International Sports University for sports science, management, and coaching

Sources indicate that large tracts of land near Pedalanka, Chinnalanka, and Moolapadu — areas across the Krishna River in the Amaravati region — have been identified for the project. The proposed area is expected to span over 1,600 to 2,000 acres, allowing ample space for multiple sports facilities, training academies, and supporting infrastructure like hotels and entertainment zones.
The project will likely be implemented under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. Major private developers and corporate sponsors are expected to participate in funding, construction, and operation, ensuring that global standards are met and maintained. Reports also suggest that some large-scale business groups, possibly including the Adani Group, have expressed early interest in collaborating on the initiative.

The Sports City is expected to have a transformative impact on the region’s economy and social development. Thousands of jobs will be generated during the construction phase, and the influx of athletes, coaches, and tourists will create sustained demand for housing, transportation, and hospitality services.

More importantly, this initiative is seen as a game-changer for youth empowerment. The government aims to identify and support sporting talent from every district of Andhra Pradesh, offering professional training and exposure at the new facility. This could help athletes from the state compete on national and international platforms, representing India in major tournaments.

In line with Amaravati’s vision as a planned, eco-friendly capital, the Sports City will emphasize green architecture, renewable energy, and sustainable water management. Planners are exploring the use of solar-powered lighting, rainwater harvesting, and waste recycling systems within the sports complex.
The surrounding infrastructure — including roads, metro connectivity, and hospitality facilities — will be designed to complement the Sports City and make it easily accessible from Vijayawada and Guntur.

While the vision is impressive, experts note that land acquisition, funding, and environmental clearance could pose challenges. The identified regions near the Krishna River are fertile and may require careful planning to prevent ecological disruption. Additionally, ensuring timely execution and long-term maintenance will be crucial for the project’s success.
Despite these challenges, public sentiment remains optimistic. With the state’s renewed focus on development and Naidu’s track record of infrastructure delivery, expectations are high that Amaravati’s Sports City could become a landmark project for Indian sports.
